Tom Jackson, actor/singer/philanthropist, tees off his fifth season of Swinging for Supper. This golf tour raises funds and awareness for food banks and soup kitchens in 3 cities across Canada – Moncton, NB, Halifax, NS, and Winnipeg, MB. Previous host communities included the Regina & District Food Bank and Calgary’s Hull Child & Family Services. Both are continuing to produce premiere golf events demonstrating their fortitude with community building and sustainability.
Swinging for Supper deliberately connects music with golf to brand this unique fundraising event. Each community hosts a casual “kitchen party” the evening before the tournament featuring entertainment by Tom Jackson with fellow musicians Tom McKillip and Craig Bignell. This invitation-only party for sponsors and special guests of the host committee begins the perfect lead in to the next days’ golf. The intent is to solidify relationships between supporters and the charity long after the golf season has slipped away.
Enbridge Pipelines Inc. is the tour’s national sponsor while a variety of local sponsors and suppliers also contribute cash and in-kind services. This cooperative setting expands each community’s financial objectives and earnings. Revenue from the 2009 tour exceeded $118,000.
“I’m proud to see how Swinging for Supper has achieved notable success over a few seasons”, says Tom Jackson. “The tournaments have fostered unique opportunities for sponsors, registrants and organizers to work collectively and to share in that indescribable joy of helping others. Because many of us benefited from a helping hand at some point in our lives, Swinging for Supper reminds us to turn around to see who may be in need. The number of hands that come forward effortlessly humbles me.”
